Firefly - omniscience.
Title: omniscience.
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: gen, pre-Rayne
Summary: A very short, very weird, pre-Rayne, River POV fic with hints of Simon's Jayne lust. Erm. Yeah.

Simon isn't a hero, isn't brave. He pretends and he stands upright when knees want to buckle. It doesn't matter why. Parental defiance, sibling care, the rush of adrenalin. But when he sleeps he dreams of heroes, older professors, mercenaries with a heart of gold. Anyone that holds him up.

Hero worship, it itches her.

And Simon thinks and Simon says and she doesn't want to listen. He gives her medicines that don't help and he doesn't notice that he's the one that's filling her thoughts. His displaced hero worship.

She calculates trajectories, swirls in time, possibilities. X-factors and unknowns. It isn't omniscience, it's mathematics. Simon's displaced gratitude leads to broken hearts. One shot and one shattered. The third frozen and the father shriveled. Four other hearts left with scratches and gushes.

River needs to put him in his place.

"Since Ariel," she says. "Afraid we'll know."

After that, comes the acceptance. Jayne is no longer a part of Simon's dreams. He's back to being Jayne again, and not a butterfly out of its rough cocoon. It's best for everyone.

They're searching for her, but she's too busy to let them find her. Gazing up at the black, she sees all possibilities. Every star is a future and if she could concentrate, she'd know how to pick the best one.

It's just a coincidence that the futures containing Jayne holding her have the brightest shine.

Silly thing, silly girl. There's no such thing as a coincidence. And stars are just gas.

She might tap on the hull in a little while, let them know where she is.
